We are always looking for new members to join us so, if you think that might be you, here are a few things you need to know.

Eligibility

To be a member of MYCO you must be a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 years of age on 1 September. This means that some people may be 11 at the time of audition. Auditions usually take place in April.

Commitment

There are rehearsals every Wednesday from 7pm until 9.30pm at Cherwell School plus approximately three Sunday rehearsals in the months leading up to the show. There are also Monday rehearsals from 7pm until 9.30pm at Marston United Reform Church for those with principal roles and solos. In the month before a show or concert the whole company is expected to be available on both Monday and Wednesday evenings. Details of Sunday rehearsals are made well in advance.

We expect our members to be available for rehearsals and to ensure that this is a priority for them. Being in MYCO helps encourage self discipline and organisation, as this is necessary at times to juggle school and rehearsal commitments.

In addition to rehearsals, we have an annual camping weekend for all members. This event is great fun, encourages members to bond and offers workshops in key performance skills.

Shows

We produce one main show a year, always in the Easter holidays and always to a professional standard. The venue alternates between the Oxford Playhouse and another theatre in the Oxford area.

We also produce a series of concerts during the year which give more of our members a chance to perform solos and small group numbers. These are generally at the end of the summer term and in the first half of the autumn term.

Ethos

MYCO is a company and we encourage all our members to participate in all our activities including shows, concerts, fundraising for Helen House, our annual workshops etc. It is by working together and supporting each other that we are able to reach the high standards we aspire to. Some of our members go on to drama school and professional theatre work and we are proud of them, but we are equally proud of those who use skills they have learnt in MYCO to achieve in other areas.

Fun

Although MYCO can be hard work, it is also a lot of fun and we try and make the rehearsal process as enjoyable as possible. We encourage social events outside the rehearsal schedule and it is a place where new friendships are often made.

Affordable membership

There are some costs involved in being a member. In particular, the annual membership fee is expected to be around £210 next year, though this is reviewed annually. However, this is much cheaper than many other organisations providing a similar experience (eg. Stagecoach, Oxford Youth Musical Theatre). There are also bursaries available for those who may need them. Please feel free to This email address is being protected from spambots. Auditions

Membership is always by audition and we try to make the process as friendly as possible! The audition consists of singing a song from a musical (of your choice) and answering some questions from the panel (eg. why do you want to join MYCO?). You will be asked to bring the sheet music for your song for our accompanist.

The audition panel consists of our Musical Directors, the Chair of MYCO and our Youth Representatives.

Belonging to MYCO

"This is my third and final year at MYCO and I can honestly say that I have loved every moment of my time with the company. Throughout my first year the members couldn’t have been more welcoming. I know that this has continued throughout my time here and will continue long after I leave due to the wonderful people MYCO attracts. Being a part of this musical theatre company allows members to be part of a community of likeminded people with a wide range of talent and fabulous musical ability. I know that joining MYCO has helped developed my confidence and it has encouraged me to become much more responsible. I will always remember with fondness my time with the company and I hope that many more young people will experience the joy of MYCO as I have."
